Wesclin looks to cap off historic season

The undefeated Warriors begin their quest for a state championship on Saturday.

When does perfection get better? When 9-and-0 becomes ten-and-oh. And then 11.

You get the idea.

That's what Wesclin High School in Trenton, Illinois wants to do. The Warriors will begin their quest for an Illinois Class 3A state championship Saturday at home against Pleasant Prairie (6-3).

The Warrior seniors spent two seasons building up to this one; 6-and-4 begat 4-and-5, and now, perfection. Head coach Ric Johns can go them two seasons better - well, worse - when he began his Wesclin tenure with an oh-and-9 mark. "It's been an exercise in persistence."

Seniors Jos DeMage and Kyle (K.J.) Cowley agree, and add that a lot of extra work after the end of last season pushed them to the school's first conference title and the top seed in their playoff bracket.

As far as the Warriors extend this season, Johns, as any coach would, is thinking of a bigger picture. "We're really hoping, as a program, to build on this season."
