WASHINGTON, Mo. - As soon as you enter the gates off Bieker Road in Washington, Missouri, you know you're about to see something special.
The modern house with a private lake just begins to describe ‘Sunset Bluffs,’ a name given to the home by the man who lives here.
“Well, I don't live here much. The reason being because I’m always working,” homeowner Fred Long said.
Long, who owns a pipe fitting company, not only lives at the home, but actually designed and built the home at just 29-years-old.
“I’m an early riser at 5 o’clock - 5:30, and in the mornings you get every single color reflection, and it’s a motivator,” Long said.
Sunset Bluffs isn't situated in any subdivision, this house sits on a rock quarry.
“It was shut down in 1982 and was a rock quarry for all of the Franklin County area,” Long explained.
When he bought the 20 acre property, there was nothing here but a vision.
“No lake, no beach, nothing,” Long said. “I ended up looking at this property when it was dilapidated for 6 years, so I through in an offer, got the property and went to work.”
The new home is listed for sale at just under $1.7 million. One of the highlights is this open kitchen-- making it easy to cook for a large crowd.
“With me having my trade as a pipe fitter background, I ended up doing all commercial appliances. So if you wanted to cook for 100 people within the hour, you could do it here. So that’s why I designed my own hood design to fit with the architecture,” he said.
Not many homes have features like a floating island suspended by cab les, a giant ceiling fan, and lighting that changes 24 different colors. And there's plenty of room for entertaining.
“When you've got 3,000-square-foot of first floor open space, with no wall in between you can throw pretty big parties,” Long said.
There are five bedrooms and four baths throughout the two-story home. And yes, there is a tub with a view in one of the bathrooms. As for the view, the man-made, eight-acre lake is basically Long’s version of a swimming pool.
“I look at this as my first design and I have potential to build so many more. I’m 29-years-old, why stop now?”
He plans to build more homes both in St. Louis and Florida, and will be leaving Sunset Bluffs in Washington, Missouri behind for the next person to enjoy.
