Zoo volunteer has put in 28,000 hours

In a building beside the carousel, behind the construction band-aids are put on boo boos.

"Oh when the flip flops come out we go through band-aids like you wouldn't believe," Julie Gerlach explains.

It's also where ice packs are handed out.

"I mean people don't realize how wonderful it is what we've got here," Gerlach adds.

She's learned a lot about the Saint Louis Zoo, but in 1984 she was the one in the dark.

"I was a zoo friend member, I had no idea they had volunteers, she says.

Then the mail arrived.

"We got one of our papers in the mail saying oh we could use some volunteers well I about broke my leg getting down here I was ready," she says with enthusiasm.

And well, she's been volunteering ever since.

"She has 28,000 hours of volunteer time, that's a lot of hours," her husband Bill points out.

Hours that led to many great memories.

"It would take me forever to tell you all the favorite memories I have. Probably every different place I've worked there's been something special," she says.

Of course what's really special is Julie and her love of the animals, the people and this incredible place.

"But what do you see when you come to the zoo, you see happy families, happy children wonderful animals, I mean it's the best, just the best," Gerlach says.
