Being a foster parent means providing temporary care for a child. Foster parents care for the daily needs of children (physical custody), but the legal responsibilities (legal custody) rests with the state. Temporary care can mean a few days to a couple of years. Being an adoptive parent means providing for daily care AND having legal responsibilities for a child. This means making a commitment to a child for a lifetime! Through the Birthday Buddy program, a donating child agrees to give some or all of his/her birthday presents to a foster child who is celebrating a birthday too. Families can look online to select their buddy from biographies of local foster children with upcoming birthdays. The Birthday Buddy program helps make the foster child?s birthday extra-special, while also teaching the donating child and his/her guests about the importance of helping others in need.
