'Guardians of the Galaxy' trailer stars odd outlaws

"What a bunch of a-holes."

They're not exactly the Avengers, but Marvel Studios introduced its newest team of superheroes to the world Tuesday night with the first trailer for the movie Guardians of the Galaxy. The footage for the film, based on the cult Marvel comic, premiered on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The mainstream was finally able to see what 6,500 fans saw at Comic-Con last July: In a police-lineup sequence, the trailer introduced Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), who'd rather be known as Star-Lord; the green-skinned assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana); the vengeful warrior Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista); trigger-happy alien creature Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper); and Rocket's plant-like "muscle" Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel).

With a mix of sci-fi and comedy, the trailer revealed one of the main plots of the film, as Quill takes possession of a mysterious orb that some of the cosmos' biggest bad guys are after. It also showcased Quill's spaceship, the Milano, and many of the colorful characters in the movie such as the weird and white-coiffed Collector (Benicio Del Toro), the scary sexy villain Nebula (Karen Gillan) and John C. Reilly and Peter Serafinowicz as a pair of law-enforcement dudes in the galactic Nova Corps.

Also for those who enjoy the sounds of the 1970s: Blue Swede's Hooked on a Feeling, a tune playing from Quill's vintage Walkman, plays throughout the trailer and hints at a musical through-line to the film.

Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters Aug. 1 and also stars Glenn Close, Lee Pace and Michael Rooker.
