Healthy Inspiration

If you've been watching the show lately you know we've been having a weight-loss challenge contest; it's pretty much like Biggest Loser only it's on a local level and doesn't have the same name.

The contest has been going on for like 5 weeks now and I am beyond impressed with not only the results we've seen but by their work ethic and over-all attitudes about living a healthier life.

I'm one of those people who sincerely wants to eat healthier but I just don't seem to ever make it happen. I guess when it comes down to it I'm all talk and no action. I mean, I even go out and buy the already prepared for you bowl of fruit to eat for breakfast, but then morning comes around and I grab the pop-tart instead, leaving the fruit to spoil in the fridge. I'm not proud of this fact, but nonetheless it's the truth.

Then our 12 Biggest Loser conetestants came around and proved what real will-power is and how you can truly turn your life around if you want to. I am seriously so impressed with all of them. The final ten have a combined weightloss of 338 pounds, isn't that incredible? They've certainly become my inspiration. On those days I want to eat poorly I think of them and what they would do and then opt for that bowl of fruit instead of the pop-tart. I know it's just a little thing but it's a start and hopefully will lead to a life-time of healthier eating choices.

To Gift Card Or Not To Gift Card

Okay, so I have a dilemma. My brother really wants a new pair of running shoes for Christmas; sounds like an easy enough present right?

Here's the problem; I don't know what kind of style or color he would like or really what brand he would choose. Basically, It's a total gamble and who knows if he would really end up liking what I chose.

You're probably thinking, that's not that big of a problem he can just return the shoes if he doesn't like them. However, he lives in Memphis, I obviously live in St. Louis and that makes the whole returning process a lot more complicated.

So do I just give him a gift card that way he can pick-out exactly what he wants? Or are gift cards to impersonal? Especially for immediate family. I know I love getting gift-cards but what's the protocol, when are they acceptable and when are they considered to impersonal?

So I ask you. Which is better: To buy a present that he may or may not like. Or to give a gift certificate where he can go out and get exactly what he wants but fear he'll think no thought went into choosing his gift?

Don't Over Water the Tree!

Okay, so many of you will probably find this hard to believe but I have never had a "real" Christmas tree. I grew up having Christmas trees in every single room of the house and all with an adorable little theme, but none of them were "real". I never really thought much about it, they were easy to put up, take down and we never had to deal with all the pine needles or WATERING. I mention watering because, this year, with my first "real" Christmas tree, we've already encountered a watering problem.

My husband (Bryan) and I bought what we thought was an idiot proof device for watering our Christmas tree. It's a long tube that sticks down into the bottom of the bucket and it's like waste high so you don't have get down on your hands and knees under the tree to water it...genius! However, you may not realize just how much water your adding...until it's too late.

Bryan (Who has always had living trees for Christmas) told me the tree needed ten glasses of water. So I pour and pour. (Oh and by the way I'm using a giant big gulp kind of cup.) So by the fourth glass, I feel like that's enough. All is good, I did a great job and our tree will survive another day!

Then, Bryan goes down into the basement only to find a HUGE puddle of water. Oops, apparently I over watered the tree so much it over flowed and went down our vents into the basement and not to mention all over our hard-wood floors in our family room. Pretty much it was a really really big mess. You may wonder how I didn't notice the over-flow, all I can say is that the tree skirt did a pretty good job of soaking up the water.

Of course it was all my fault, not my loving husband who TOLD me to essentially over-water the tree and who has had "real" Christmas trees in the past.

I don't know, whose fault do you think it was? Or are we BOTH at fault? Oh and if you want to share any of your holiday decorating debacles please do...we're stronger in numbers!

Great Job!

I absolutely love my job! If you ever watch Show Me St. Louis you probably already know that because I say it almost every day; but can you blame me? My job is to go out meet interesting people doing interesting things. Plus, I know all about the new restaurants and new boutiques in St. Louis. (Clothes and Food by the way are two of my guilty pleasures.)

Monday, I showed up to work in sweats because we did a story on a new personal training studio. Tuesday, I spent the morning at a new St. Louis business that will make my dinner making process so much easier, today I played with the wolves and tomorrow I’m going to the Circus! I mean, I don’t want to brag or anything, but how cool is that!?!

Who knows what I’m doing next week? Don’t worry I’ll keep you posted!

About Courtney

To answer the first question most of you will ask, I went to Indian Hill High School and no that’s not in St. Louis, it’s actually in Cincinnati Ohio.  Once I graduated from good Ole IHHS it was off to Dallas Texas where I attended Southern Methodist University. I worked for the college station SMU-TV and instantly knew I wanted to pursue journalism.  I graduated from SMU with a B.A. in Journalism. While in college I met a pretty special guy, Bryan.  Bryan is from St. Louis and so one summer when we didn’t think we could be apart for those long three months I applied for an internship at KSDK for the Show Me St. Louis intern position and I got it!  That summer I followed around the reporters trying to mimic their every move.  I wanted to be just like them. The internship not only solidified my love for journalism but also made me realize that one day I wanted to work for Show Me St. Louis. Directly out of college I got a job at KTVO, the ABC affiliate in Kirksville Missouri.  I was a general assignment reporter for two years at KTVO.  Then, that pretty special guy back in college proposed and I knew I wanted to get back to St. Louis. Luckily there was a job opening at Show Me St. Louis and the rest is history.  I absolutely love my job.  I love the team of people I get to work with everyday.  I also really enjoy getting out and meeting the great people of Missouri and learning about all the fun and interesting things you can do here.
