Billie-Jean serves contemporary American cuisine with an Asian twist

People are still buzzing about a Clayton restaurant that opened at the end of 2017. It's called Billie-Jean and Dana Dean went to check it out.

Billie-Jean is a restaurant with inventive food, cocktails with a twist, and modern art all in a purposefully dark space.

"The fabric, the tile, we ensconsed the hood, the oven the equipment all in black steel so it would just be layer upon layer of black," said Zoe Robinson.

The vibe is sexy.

"Very sexy," she said.

Billie-Jean is serving up dishes like whole roasted snapper with Asian salsa verde.

"Billie-Jean is contemporary American but we have a heavy Asian accent."

Everyone from chefs to servers sport uniforms paying tribute to that famous Michael Jackson song, with hats that read "Not Your Lover" and "Lover" but this restaurant actually isn't named after a tune.

She said, "I named it for my parents. My mom's name was Billie and my father's name was Jean."

While its an elegant space, the owner wants customers to feel like they can have fun when they get here.

"I can't stand this phrase, 'Oh, I don't feel like I'm in St. Louis.' I want you to feel like you're in St. Louis and some place very cool in St. Louis. We want to transport people, not from there city, but from what they did today. That's what we do in all three of our restaurants," she said.

All three of Zoe Robinson's restaurants are located on the same street, Wydown Boulevard in Clayton.

I Fratellini opened 16 years ago and Bar Les Freres opened 5 years ago.

Now that Zoe has three restaurants on the same street, is a fourth in the works?

"I will do another restaurant, maybe one day. Maybe a bar, maybe a restaurant. But not right now. This has been really fun," she said.
