Elementary students donate leftovers to help hungry classmates

Elementary school students are working together to prevent hunger in the classroom.

Boone Elementary School in Troy, Missouri, started a new program last week that allows students who don’t eat all their lunch to donate the rest to their classmates.

They can toss any uneaten, unopened items on a “share table” in the cafeteria, and any kid who needs an extra bite can grab them – no questions asked.

Some watchful fourth graders volunteer to help with the program.

“Cause they don’t always have a lot of stuff to eat and this provides them food for when they’re hungry,” fourth grader Gavin May said.

School administrators say the program has become so popular, some kids are bringing extra food in their lunchboxes just to donate.

An adult always monitors the food collection, and any item believed to be risky for kids with food allergies is given to the school’s nurse, who makes sure it gets into the hands of a child who can eat it.
