New York Times writer calls for sweatpants, says yoga pants are 'bad for women'

And yes, you bet the backlash was heated.

A writer for the New York Times wants women to stop wearing yoga pants and start wearing sweatpants again.

And yes, you bet the online backlash was heated.

Yoga pants are a wardrobe staple for most women. The tight pants are stretchy, soft and oh, so comfortable. Women will throw on a pair to break a sweat just as often as they're worn to meet a friend for lunch or to run errands. The fabric is so popular, women even have the option of buying yoga dress pants to wear to work.

But New York Times writer, Honor Jones, isn't a fan of leggings. She actually dislikes yoga pants so much she decided to write a scathing opinion piece on why women shouldn't wear them. Jones does point out "it’s not good manners for women to tell other women how to dress" before proceeding to do just that.

The author even seems annoyed at women who wear yoga pants to -- ahem -- yoga class.

Jones claims women wear yoga pants "because they're sexy" and makes a case for bringing back the looser, not-as-flattering alternative -- sweatpants.

"No one looks good in sweatpants. But that’s not the point. They’re basically just towels with waistbands. They exist for two activities: lounging and exercising — two activities that you used to be able to do without looking like a model in a P90X infomercial."

She goes as far to suggest women over 30 don't look good in yoga pants.

We may be able to conquer the world wearing spandex. But wouldn’t it be easier to do so in pants that don’t threaten to show every dimple and roll in every woman over 30?

As expected, the op-ed wasn't very well received on the internet.

The list of angry tweets is long enough to circle the globe, maybe even multiple times.

However, there were some people who voiced their dislike of yoga pants for legitimate reasons, such as health.

While some women reject leggings for their well-being, other women need to wear leggings for their health.

In conclusion, love them or hate them, yoga pants are here to stay.
