Two soldiers were killed and six others hurt in an accident Friday at the Fort Jackson Army base outside Columbia, S.C., the base confirmed via Twitter.
Two of the injured are in critical condition, the base said in the statement.
"A tragic accident involving a military vehicle and a troop formation . . . resulted in the deaths of two soldiers and injured six others," the base reported.
The accident happened in the late afternoon and details remain sketchy. The names of the soldiers are being withheld pending notification of relatives.
"Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the soldiers we lost today and to the families of the injures, they represent the best of our nation," U.S. Army Training Center and Fort Jackson Commander Maj. Gen. Pete Johnson.
Fort Jackson is the Army’s largest training instillation, with more than 50,000 recruits assigned there each year.
