Old Mayfair Hotel to reopen as Magnolia Hotel

ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – There's new life for a historic hotel downtown.

The old Mayfair Hotel on 8th Street is undergoing a $1 million renovation. It's being transformed into a boutique hotel called the Magnolia.

The hotel first opened in 1924 and has a long list of famous guests – including Harry S. Truman, Lyndon Johnson and Cary Grant.

The new owners are preserving as much of the original architecture as possible, including the stained glass windows, chandeliers and crown molding. And that's just the only nod to the past.

"We will also bring back the wonderful treat of chocolate on your bed that was actually started here at the Mayfair by Cary Grant, so the Cary Grant suite upstairs is coming back to life," Leigh Hitz said. "It will have a lot of photographs of Cary Grant entertaining different ladies."

There's no word yet on if they're bringing back the famous Mayfair salad dressing.

The hotel will reopen in August.
