Archdale, NC -- A UNC-Chapel Hill student was shot early Monday following a confrontation with Archdale Police.
The State Bureau of Investigation says the student, 21-year-old Courtland Smith from Houston, Texas, was shot by Archdale police officer Jeremy Flinchum.
The incident started just before 5 am on Sunday. An officer was called out for a traffic stop on Interstate 85 to help a man who was suicidal.
Officers say they stopped the car near the Hopewell Church Road exit. An altercation then ensued between officers and Smith.
During the altercation, Smith was shot by Archdale Police officer Jeremy Flinchum. He was transported to High Point Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Archdale Police and the State Bureau of Investigation are not releasing any addition information related to the confrontation or the shooting.
