St. Louis (KSDK) - The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to watch where they put their debit and credit cards. The group says a technique known as "card skimming" is a growing problem.
According to Bankrate.com, ATM skimmers are stealing $1 billion every year from people. And one in five peopls has already become a victim.
The Better Business Bureau says there are number of ways thieves can steal debit and credit card information, but it only takes a few seconds to install devices to allow for card skimming.
Thieves often use cameras near keypads, or install devices that read card information and PIN's off cards swipers and scanners at grocery stores and gas pumps. And chances are, you wouldn't even know the devices are there.
"Skimming devices are becoming increasingly harder to detect and often blend in seamlessly with the ATM," said Alison Southwick, BBB spokesperson. "If you're going to use an ATM, you could become a victim, and it's important to monitor your accounts closely so you can quickly detect any fraudulent activity on your card and minimize your losses."
The Better Business Bureau offers a few simple steps to protect yourself.
- Protect your PIN: When you're entering your PIN, cover the keypad so no one else can see it.
- Check card scanners: Give a scanner a wiggle. Often skimming devices are false panels that can be detected.
- Choose your ATM carefully: Use ATM's in high traffic areas that are lit well.
- Keep an eye on your statement: Check your bank and credit card statements closely to see if there has been fraudulent activity.
- Report Fraud Immediately: The quicker you report fraudulent activity, the less likely you are to get cleaned out.
