Creve Coeur, MO (KSDK) - An elderly man who was rushed to St. John's Hospital after falling into an icy ravine Wednesday night has died.

According to the Creve Coeur Police Department, the 81-year-old man left his home in the 11500 block of Lakeshore Drive to walk his dog. The dog returned home a short time later but was unaccompanied by the owner. The man's family contacted the police department around 7:50 p.m.

Police and fire crews responded and began to search in earnest.  Within an hour, they discovered foot tracks leading them to a deep embankment near a lake, located about 100 yards north of the home.

They found the elderly man laying in a foot of ice cold water. Authorities were able to pull the man out and kept him warm by covering him with jackets, blankets and towels from a neighbor's home, before sending him off to the hospital for medical help.

Eric Rosenbloom saw the rescue from his home.

"To see him laying in the water was extremely sad," said Rosenbloom.

"My wife went out there, she's a nurse, and she helped a little bit, but it was deep so it took them a little while to get him out," says Rosenbloom.

Early Thursday morning, a spokesperson for St. John's Hospital confirmed the man passed away.

The man's name has not been released yet.
