St. Louis (KSDK) -- Some North St. Louis residents got a very big gift Saturday thanks to hundreds of volunteers.

Men and women from across the area spent their Saturday turning some eyesores into newly rehabbed homes.

Rebuilding together of St. Louis rehabbed 5 homes and the goal is to do around 30 homes this year
.
Several residents said they never imagined anyone would offer to work for free and spend an entire day rehabbing their homes.

"I feel like it's good to give to the community and give to other people and help to make their lives better," said volunteer, John Enberg.

Among the volunteers who gave facelifts to homes were church members, youth groups and employees from companies like Boeing. Volunteer help from experts came with the skills from union workers including plumbers and electricians.

"They are committed to making this society better and helping people who can't help themselves," said executive director, Dave Ervin.

"It just to me wanna cry and I wanna laugh, and I want to run because its just awesome and it is a blessing," said homeowner Flora Grimm.

Rebuilding Together St Louis started in 1993 with just a few homes, and have since helped more than 1200 homeowners.
