St. Louis (KSDK) - A number of people are pulling together to find ways to help survivors of Joplin's tornado.
NewsChannel 5 visited a supply drive that was taking in Forest Park, for those affected in Southwest Missouri.
The supply drive was literally put together at the last minute Monday by a St. Louis resident who says he was moved to act, and he couldn't stand by knowing there are other Missourians in need.
They're collecting just about everything from nonperishable food items, clothing, hygiene products, and even dog food. The coordinator of the supply drive is Aaron Laxton.
"These are my neighbors, brothers and sisters. It's a human thing. I don't even have to question it. The people that are in Joplin are hurting. They lost everything. Unfortunately we have to sometimes think outside of our busy lives and say I'm going to help my neighbor," says Laxton.
He says he ended up getting a little help from his friends and Penske, who donated two moving trucks. Paxton says the plan is to personally drive down these supplies in the coming days to deliver them to those in need. A number of people stopping by Monday, adding their donations-many with ties to the Joplin area. One Clayton High School tells NewsChannel5, she has family that was caught in the middle of Sunday's tornado.
"They all laid on the ground. It was my grandma, my two aunts, and my cousin held the door shut because he didn't know what else to do. Once the tornado hit, everything just was gone, and the roof fell in and my aunt broke both her legs and her arm," says Erin Butler, a Clayton High School student.
That student says all her relatives are accounted for and she's now coordinating a supply drive at Clayton High School Tuesday for students and staff who would like to donate.
If you'd like to add to the trucks Laxton plans to drive down to Joplin, they'll be parked near the intersection of Hampton and Chippewa, in the Hampton Village parking lot from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
