Grafton, IL. (KSDK) - Organizers of the St. Louis American Diabetes Association held the 2011 Tour de Cure Saturday in Grafton. They say more than 1,000 bicycle riders turned out to help them raise money for diabetes research, treatment, education, and advocacy.
Ed Clay is senior executive director.
"We're closing in on the quarter-million dollar mark," said Clay. "I think we'll be well over $300,000."
Clay said that came despite record-setting warm temperatures Saturday.
"We have a lot of sag vehicles and a lot of people and a lot of people on the route with water and rest stops," said Clay. "The more hard-core riders were ready for this. Some of the shorter-mile riders weren't quite ready so we're pulling them off the route if they want to get off."
Organizers said there were no major health issues as a result of the heat.
