Trio indicted on hate crime

Mascoutah, IL (KSDK) - A grand jury indicted three Metro East men on hate crime charges, the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office said Monday.

According to court documents, the incident occurred on June 4 in Mascoutah. The suspects, Anthony Kunkel, Christopher Berry and Christopher Jeffrey, allegedly threatened bodily harm and uttered racial slurs against an African-American man. The targeted man felt unreasonably alarmed and notified authorities.

The three suspects were each charged with hate crime.

If convicted, they face one to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections or up to 30 months probation.
