Benld, ILL (KSDK) - The historic Coliseum Ballroom in Benld, Illinois, was destroyed by fire late Saturday night.

The blaze broke out around 9:15pm.  It took 16 fire departments nearly three hours to get it under control.

Fire officials tell NewsChannel 5 three people were hospitalized for inhalation and minor burns.

In recent years, the building has been used primarily as an antique mall.

According the Coliseum Ballroom's website, the Coliseum Ballroom was built in 1923 along Route 66 and has played host to Tommey Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Fats Domino, Johnny Rivers, Ray Charles, Ike and Tina Turner and more.  The website also claims Al Capone frequented the concert venue.
