St. Louis (KSDK) -- "Rachel and I grew up with Teresa we met in kindergarten in South St. Louis," explains Jean Fox.

It's one of those friendships that survived high school and bad hair.

"Oh talk about bad hair. She did that to me," Fox says pointing at Rachel Ebeling.

And made weddings even more memorable.

"It's one of those weird friendships where I don't really remember meeting her, I don't really remember meeting Rachel either, but we were just always together," Fox adds.

But in 2009, one of the three lost her life tragically.

"They woke up at 3 a.m. with a stranger standing with a knife next to their bed," Fox explains.

It was an unimaginable attack.

"We've both experienced grief, everyone does, but this was so different," Fox goes on to say.

But at Teresa's funeral, something happened.

"There was just this real beauty and grace that we received from the music," explains Fox.

So Jean and Rachel decided to capture that, and in the process, carry on their friend's spirit forever.

"She called me and she said I know what we're going to do, we're going to make this album," Ebeling says.

Mind you, neither of them can carry a tune, but Teresa's family is remarkably talented; her brother Norbert Butz just won his second tony award.

"They definitely didn't want us to do it just for their sake, that if it could help other people possibly, they would agree to it, Fox says.

So "The Angel Band Project" was formed and a CD made with proceeds going to The Voices & Faces Project, a non-profit fighting to end sexual violence.

It's an album they say is part benefit album, part musical Prozac.

"Personally the music has completely helped to heal and still continues to," Ebeling says.

Of course, the hope is the album will continue to help heal others, something they no doubt know their friend would have wanted.

"I think she would be really touched by the fact that now her life and unfortunately her death, has profoundly affected what we thought would be a few people within our own community, but it is affected people all over that never knew her," Ebeling adds.

The CD is available on iTunes and features three generations of the Butz family as well as Teresa's partner, who survived the attack.
