St. Charles County (KSDK) - A St. Charles man cast his line and caught what he thought would be the biggest catch of his life, but it turned out to be the most shocking.
Adam Havener caught an alligator almost three feet long!
The animal was caught Tuesday night along a tributary of the Mississippi River near Boschertown in St. Charles County. Havener used a plastic lizard as bait, and the shimmer caught the alligator's eye.
"It was like, spinning around, running around everywhere. It was weird," said Havener.
The aggressive gator was all caught up in the line, so regretfully, they put him down.
A Herpetologist for the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed the creature is an American Alligator, native to southeastern states, not Missouri.
Experts have no way of knowing how many alligators are in Missouri waters, but they don't believe there are many. The ones found in Missouri waters have either been released by people who kept them as pets, or escaped.
