Deangelo Johnson, INMATE ESCAPE SLU
St. Louis (KSDK)-- St. Louis Police say the convicted burglar who escaped after being treated at an area hospital around 10:30 p.m. Monday has surrendered to officers and is back in custody.
Authorities say Johnson was apprehended at the home of his sister in the 7800 block of Minnesota at 10:45pm Tuesday.
Saint Louis University Hospital spokesperson Laura Keller said 26-year-old Deangelo Johnson was treated for an undisclosed ailment on Monday night before fleeing, once he was outside the hospital facility.
Johnson was at a relative's home in south St. Louis when officers acting on a tip arrived to re-arrest him. Family members told News Channel 5 arrangements were underway to return Deangelo to police when officers arrived.
Officials and family members say the arrest occurred without incident.
Police said when he fled, Johnson was wearing a grey jumpsuit with ankle chains around one leg and attached to his waist. Johnson also had handcuffs. Johnson was not wearing shoes when he escaped.
Johnson was incarcerated at the St. Louis Community Release Center on North First Street on a burglary conviction stemming from an incident of June 2010.
In August 2011, Johnson received a suspended 10 year prison term and ordered to serve 120 days of shock treatment, followed by three years probation with a variety of conditions which were ordered by the Judge who was assigned to the case in St. Louis Circuit Court.
Family members told ksdk.com that Johnson has been diagnosed with mental illness and is bi-polar.
