  • St. Louis (KSDK) - A Halloween candy buy back program is going to support troops overseas.

Dentists and orthodontists around the area are taking part in the program.  The Demko Orthodontics group with locations Chesterfield, Washington, and St. Charles is among those participating.  Its program is called CODE:SMiLE, and it helps develop a mentoring program for youth, as well as support members of service.

The program works by allowing patients to turn in their halloween candy at their dentist or orthodontist's office.  Those offices participating in Operation Gratitude will then put that candy in care packages to be sent to troops serving overseas.  At the Demko offices, the patient also receives points for every pound of donated candy.  The points add up for gift cards to Target.
