Jefferson City, MO (KSDK) - With Black Friday on the horizon, Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel is advising shoppers to hang onto any unused gift cards and certificates because they could be considered unclaimed property.
In 2011, Zweifel said his office has returned $130,000 worth of gift cards and there's $5.8 million waiting to be claimed. But that doesn't mean expired cards can be kept indefinitely.
According to state law, any unused value on gift cards and certificates is turned over to the State Treasury after five years.
To see if your gift certificate can be redeemed through the state, visit ShowMeMoney.com or email the State Treasurer's office at unclaimedproperty@treasurer.mo.gov.
