St. Louis (KSDK) - While Albert Pujols and his family are on vacation in Hawaii, there's a controversy swirling around his agent.

A scathing article about Dan Lozano was written recently, and with Albert being a free agent, this couldn't have come at a worse time.

Lozano is about to negotiate one of the biggest contracts in sports history, so it's reasonable to wonder whether the timing is coincidence, or whether someone wants Pujols to drop his agent and sign with another before his new mega-deal happens.

The Deadspin.com article is titled "The King of Sleeze Mountain" and it was written by Barry Petchesky. The article calls into question the business practices and the character of Dan Lozano, Pujols' agent for eleven years.

The article explains someone delivered unmarked manila envelopes containing damaging information about Lozano to media outlets including Deadspin, ESPN, Sports Illustrated and Fox sports. Included in the envelopes are names, documents, and photographs that paint an unsavory portrait of Lozano's business tactics.

Among other things, it's alleged that Lozano hired prostitutes for some of his clients and prospective clients. It's alleged that he lied about his education and personal history, and it's alleged that Lozano's personal financial troubles led Pujols to sign a below market contract extension with the Cardinals in 2004, so Lozano could get his commission.

The author of the article, Barry Petchesky, said via email that he doesn't know who sent the anonymous information.

"I have my ideas, but couldn't say because I honestly don't know," said Petchesky.

Albert Pujols told Sport Director Rene Knott he's on vacation and not interested in talking about the Lozano article.

In a September interview with USA Today, Pujols said, "I've heard all of the dirt about Danny from agents for the last ten years, all trying to sign me. They're wasting their time. Danny has been an open book. To me, he's the best agent in the business and I trust him with my life."

Even in the cutthroat world of big money sports agents, this story is over the top. Stay tuned to see if any of this affects the Pujols contract negotiation.
