Granite City, IL (KSDK) - Two teenage girls and a man in his early twenties were killed in a single-car accident on St. Thomas Rd. in Granite City. The accident happened around 11:45 Saturday night.
Authorities say the three were passengers in a 2000 Pontiac Trans Am driven by a man who was critically injured in the crash. They were traveling southbound on St. Thomas Rd. when the car spun, crossed over the northbound lanes and struck the concrete pillar of the overpass that carries Interstate 270 over St. Thomas Road.
When police arrived they found the car fully engulfed in flames. All four occupants had been ejected from the vehicle. Investigators say no one in the car appeared to have been wearing a seatbelt.
Samantha Cook, 19, of Madison, IL, Brittany Ritchie, 18 of Mitchell, IL and Christopher Green, 23, of Madison, IL were pronounced dead at the scene. Joshua Thebeau, 24, of Alton, IL was the lone survivor. He was taken to a hospital in St. Louis.
Brittany Ritchie leaves behind a young son. Friends tell NewsChannel 5 Ritchie and Thebeau were dating.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The Madison County Sheriff's Department is asking anyone with information to contact them at 618-692-4433 or their anonymous tip line at 618-296-3000.
A fund to pay for funeral expenses for Brittany Ritchie has been established in her name at Granite City Credit Union. Donations to the fund can be made at any Granite City Credit Union location.
