Affton, MO (KSDK) - Water problems have plagued an Affton family's condominium.
The builder has addressed the issue, but the homeowners still aren't satisfied. They're worried about mold and what years of water damage have done to home's structure.
Kelly Brown and her husband moved into a new condominium built by McBride and Son Homes three years ago. Within weeks their water troubles began.
"We see water running in through where the drywall and the window meet, and it was almost like it was trying to find a gap to come through," said Kelly Brown.
After a call to the builder, they were on it.
"They thought maybe the windows needed to be replaced, so they had ordered some windows," said Brown.
But after an inspection, McBride and Sons decided the condo was missing house wrap.
But the water problems persisted for three more years.
Then this summer the Browns hired an industrial hygiene firm for an evaluation. EnviroPro's report confirmed water damage and the presence of mold.
Last month contractors were back out, this time removing moldy and rotten boards and installing wrapping that was supposed to be installed in 2008. They also removed damaged drywall inside, but industry standards were not followed.
"The areas of concern were removed partially, not as we indicated, but as they felt was necessary. And there was nothing to show to verify that the job was completed," said Tom Alford with EnviroPro.
"It's almost like a band-aid has been put on everything, just to buy some time," said Brown.
McBride and Sons would not go on camera, but in a written response CEO and Chairman John Eilermann Jr. offered a statement saying they completed effective repairs on November 3 and 4, and that Mr. Brown and his consultant were present. A process the Browns say did not address the condo's structural damage.
"Our studs are chipping away at where we've had the heaviest water infiltration, and when they left that day and put the siding and the boards back up, they left those studs there," said Brown.
"Being employee owned, customer satisfaction is very important to McBride & Son," said Eilermann. "Our commitment to resolving this situation was a priority before this story and will be a priority until resolution."
It's what the Browns are counting on.
"It's a condo, it's our home, we paid for it, and that's what we want. The house that we paid for," said Brown.
Eilermann assures NewsChannel 5 they will continue to address this issue.
A member of the company's management team is scheduled to meet with the Browns Friday.
