It is a fixture in Wood River, one of the town's oldest businesses. But that's about to change. After 87-years, Smits is closing its doors.
Owner Judy Wilder says she needs to spend more time with her aging mother, and with her grandchildren.
Wilder says, "For a year we've been thinking about it but I just couldn't do it. And finally it was just the time."
Since that decision, the shop has been packed, mostly with longtime customers.
Many came to say their goodbyes, pick up one last gift or bouquet. They say this shop has always offered something extra.
Jacquelyn Vander says, "There are others. But you want one with a personalized touch. And that's what this store has been. And it's been here for so long."
Wilder says, "They just call to say thanks for taking care, I remember you when my mother died. I remember you when my babies were born. You did my dances, my kids dances. You don't realize. You really do touch people through flowers."
And employees say that's what made this place great, and what makes leaving so difficult.
Employee Dottie Krome says, "You get to know them all. They're like family."
Smit's will provide flowers for two weddings Saturday.
After that, employees will be looking for work.
Wilder says she'd love someone else to take over. And though it wasn't advertised, she'd happily sell it all. She says, three people have expressed interest so far.
Wilder says, "Hopefully there will be another shop that picks up my designers. Or someone will buy it. I'll give them the key and i'll leave. That would be fine."
Smit's Flowers will close at noon on Saturday. Employees are planning a quiet lunch afterward to mark the occasion.
