St. Louis (KSDK) -- St. Louis police want everyone to safely celebrate New Year's Eve and to remember they will be out enforcing the laws.
Major Lawrence O'Toole said there will be a team of officer's responding to shots fired calls for people who choose to shoot off guns to celebrate the new year. He said it is illegal in the city of St. Louis to discharge a gun and it violates a city ordinance. If someone fires a gun who has been drinking, then it is a felony in the state of Missouri.
Major O'Toole said people need to remember that what goes up must come down and that some bullets from high-powered guns can travel miles.
The St. Louis Police Department's Traffic Safety Division officers will be out patrolling the streets looking for intoxicated drivers. They will be all over the city, including in areas that have a higher accident rate and where there have been numerous past drunk driving incidents.
