Webster Groves, MO (KSDK) - An iconic local music store is going out of business.

After nearly 60 years in business, Webster Records is closing its doors at the end of the month.

For decades, Webster Records on Lockwood Avenue has been a popular place for musicians and music lovers of jazz, classical, big band and even rock and soul sounds.

Jay Ryan has been buying music here for more than 20 years.

"It's just one of those things you just always expect to be there. You know, the sun rises in the morning and Webster Records will be there," said Ryan.

As a closing gift to customers, all music in the store is 30 percent off.

There will be additional discounts as the closing date nears.

The bright red sign went up at the Lockwood location in 1953.

On Wednesday, an email from store officials to customers said in part, "all good things must come an end."

Store clerk Bill Wondracek said it's especially true when the competition is really tough.

"It's a new digital age where people buy online and little stores like us? Well, we're dinosaurs, unfortunately. It's a thing of the past," said Wondracek.

They'll be selling music until the end; newer artists such as Andrea Bocelli or what they're really known for, vinyl; jazz artists such as Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra and Count Basie and they'll be selling stuff that's not even made anymore; 45's.

Several people have called wanting to know how much the big red sign out front will cost. They say it's not for sale.

Dorothy Gleason, who died last year, and her husband, Roy, founded the store which has had several owners.

At one time, the Gleasons sold square dance and school physical education records throughout the USA.

The orders came from across the United States.

Webster Records will close on January 31st.
