Hazelwood, MO (KSDK) - They're getting ready to do a round of hiring, and today Emerald Automotive says they've got the first prototypes of the hybrid van they plan to manufacture in Hazelwood, Missouri.
Their computer-generated images have now become reality, with the unveiling of their first demonstrator vans. They're being road-tested this week in the United Kingdom.
They have a diesel motor that recharges the battery while the van is moving. Emerald executives say they get 70 miles to the gallon and can haul 3,000 pounds.
"You look at what they've actually built and it's just the same, it's just real now. You can touch it and feel it. It's so cool," said Sales and Communication Director Gary Marble.
Ultimately, the manufacturing will be done in Hazelwood. The hope is to get a location locked down soon.
The company has narrowed their site selection down to three potential locations, and while they're not giving specifics, sources say they're looking primarily at existing buildings along Lindbergh Boulevard. They might still consider constructing their own facility if necessary.
"It will be in Hazelwood. All of them are in Hazelwood so that's where we're going to be," said Marble.
As for jobs, the hiring is just now beginning, mostly for management.
"Already on board, accounting management those type of things. Looking now for supply chain, various types of issues throughout the manufacturing process," said Marble.
In addition to the 2011 hires, there will be about 38 more in 2012.
But then things really ramp up. In 2013 there will be 290 jobs added, in 2014 there should be 581 more. There have been about 1,000 applicants for those jobs already. Emerald executives say just be patient.
"We're in the process of hiring the people who do the hiring," said Marble.
They say so far things are progressing right on track.
"Now we've got vans actually rolling out the door of a facility, we're ready to make this thing happen. And it's exciting," said Marble.
Emerald plans to have the first vans off the line by 2014.
