St. Louis (KSDK) -- An electric vehicle charging station opened in downtown St. Louis.

The Coulomb ChargePoint Network EV charging station opened at the corner of 7th and Lucas in the Mercantile Exchange District.

The ChargePoint charging station is managed by the ChargePoint Network, the largest online global charging network connecting electric vehicle drivers to charging stations. Drivers will enjoy the advanced features and benefits of the ChargePoint Network including 24/7 driver support, driver billing options and mobile phone applications that provide drivers with real-time station location and availability, turn-by-turn navigation, and charging status.

"Eventually we are not going to have fossil fuels. Give it 40 to 50 years, every car will be electric, hydrogen, fuel cell, you name it. So this is the way it's going, this is the way of the future and with every major auto maker making a car like this, this is going to be in demand. We hope this is the first of very many in downtown St Louis," said Jay Swoboda with the MX District.

Swoboda works for Spinnaker St. Louis, which had the new unit installed. He says it's strategically placed in front of the Laurel Apartments because the building is all about sustainable living. The EV charging station was just installed last week.

Mayor Francis Slay says he expects more EV charging stations to pop all over the city as the demand increases.

There are other charging stations available in the St. Louis. You can download the free app PlugShare to find the one nearest you.
