Fairview Heights, IL (KSDK)- Fairview Heights Police are searching for a man responsible for an attempted burglary.

They say there may be more suspects out there who use a similar approach.

Fairview Heights Police say a suspect will ring doorbells soliciting work, like raking leaves or cleaning gutters, to see if anyone is home. If the home seems empty, the suspect will break in.

Police say recently, a burglar was caught in the act. Police say it happened last Tuesday around 9 a.m. in the 4600 block of Old Caseyville Road.

Police say the homeowner heard his door bell ring but didn't answer because he was sleeping. Moments later, he noticed someone opening his bedroom window, peering in. The homeowner then yelled he would shoot if the suspect came into his home. That's when the suspect fled.

Fairview Heights Police say lately methods similar to this have been used to burglarize homes in the area which has people living on Old Caseyville Road taking all precautions.

"Now I lock my doors and try to get more locks so we have more safety around the house and I never open the doors anyway even during the day. I always look out and if it is somebody I know then I can open it but, otherwise I will not open the door for nobody," said Trudy Navickas, who lives in the 4600 block of Old Caseville Road.

Police say they have a person of interest in this case. They already arrested that person but, warrants were dropped because of a lack of evidence.

If you have any information, or if you have been solicited in this manner contact the Fairview Heights Police Department at (618) 397-2223.
