CHICAGO (AP) - A new report shows that teen employment in Illinois has dropped to the lowest level in the 42 years for which data is available.

The report from Northeastern University finds that 27.5 percent of Illinois teens are employed. That number was just shy of 50 percent a decade earlier, and it was at 36 percent in 2007.

The report released Tuesday was prepared by Northeastern's Center for Labor Market Studies.

Co-author Andrew Sum calls the findings "staggeringly bad." Sum says getting early work experience has a big impact on how well people do in the early and mid-20s.
