Clayton, MO (KSDK) - The City of Clayton passed an ordinance Tuesday night creating a domestic partner registry.
Clayton is the third municipality in St. Louis County to create a registry, and creates a system where same-sex couples as well as opposite-sex couples can make their relationship a matter of record. This will make it easier for couples to receive benefits such as hospital and jail visitation, and health insurance benefits.
"The City of Clayton has always worked to build an inclusive community that strives to improve our residents' quality of life at all levels," said Clayton Mayor Linda Goldstein. "Building strong family units and protecting the rights of those in relationships is part of that initiative. The registry can help strengthen bonds that are important to the welfare of our diverse city."
"Tonight's vote in Clayton marks an important step forward for our families," said A.J. Bockelman, Executive Director for PROMO, Missouri's statewide advocacy organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender equality.
The ordinance took effect immediately; however details as to when it will be available for public use have not been disclosed.
It will cost $50 to register, and open to same-sex and opposite-sex relationships.
