Wood River, IL (KSDK) - A Wood River detective shot a 22-year-old man Friday morning after he was spotted driving a vehicle that had been stolen in Pacific, Missouri.
The incident happened at the intersection of Harnett and Wood River Avenue around 10 a.m.
A spokesperson with the Wood River Police Department says two detectives were in the area when they saw the stolen Chevy Coupe unoccupied. As they were turning their car around they saw a man enter the vehicle.
The detectives pulled their car in front of the stolen vehicle to keep the man from getting away.
As the detectives approached the suspect on foot, they identified themselves, but the suspect started to drive in the direction of one of the detectives.
The detective fired his weapon and struck the suspect, identified as Matthew J. Lane, and the car came to rest after hitting a power pole.
Lane was taken to an area hospital and is listed in stable condition.
Investigators say the officer is a veteran with about 20 years experience. He was not driving a police vehicle and was dressed in street clothes.
Lane has been charged with one count of attempted first degree murder and one count of offenses related to motor vehicles.
Bond is set at $300,000.
