Portland, Oregon (KGW) - Four boys at Portland, Oregon's Grant High School have been under investigation for a January 12 sexual assault following a boy's JV basketball team game that was first reported as a hazing incident.
"The details of the event are still being investigated," said district spokesperson Matt Shelby. "I'm not going into those (details) at this time but suffice it to say the school took this seriously and started their own investigation."
Four players have been suspended since the incident.
Portland Police Bureau spokesman Lt. Robert King said the case was turned over to sex crimes detectives.
What initially was described as a hazing was far worse, he said Monday.
"Hazing, bullying, really the safety of our kids at school, is one of the single most important things for us as an investigation," King said, "It's the emphasis, the focus daily of our youth services division."
Shelby said school leaders notified authorities immediately.
Shelby said Monday that violence of any sort will not be tolerated.
"There's no place for that at Grant High School or any of our high schools," he said.
Grant principal Vivian Orlen issued an earlier statement that said:
"I take all reports of bullying, assault or intimidation very seriously. All students have the right to be in a physically and emotionally safe environment. We will continue to work with authorities to fully investigate this incident."
