San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Johnny Dee led the way with 19 points as the
San Diego Toreros downed the Santa Clara Broncos, 70-65, in a West Coast
Conference battle at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Christopher Anderson added 13 points for the Toreros (9-14, 4-7 WCC) and Chris
Manresa pulled down 10 rebounds.
For the Broncos (8-15, 0-10) Evan Roquemore finished with 21 points, all of
them in second half, and Denzel Johnson dropped in 20 points.
Neither team shot the ball well to start the game. USD made just 33.3 percent
of their field goals, including 4-of-10 from three-point range. SCU hit on
just 30.8 percent from the field, and just 1-of-9 on their three-point
attempts. The Toreros opened the contest on a 20-6 run. The Broncos were
able to narrow the gap to just five, but the Toreros pushed the lead back to
double digits and took a 35-23 advantage into halftime.
After the break, the teams improved their shooting. USD connected on 50
percent of their field goals in the second, including 3-of-4 from three-point
range. SCU hit on 42.9 percent from the field, including 3-of-10 on their
three-point attempts. After trailing by double digits for most of the second
half, the Broncos used a 13-2 run to cut their deficit to just three, 63-60,
with 2:32 to play. The Toreros were able hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final
two minutes to hold on for the victory, snapping a two-game losing streak.
USD outscored SCU 25-15 at the free-throw line. The Broncos remain winless on
the road (0-8) this season.
