St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - The former coach for the Saint Louis University men's soccer team and member of the United States' 1950 World Cup team died Tuesday.
Harry Keough, a St. Louis native, played defender for the renowned 1950 U.S. national team that beat England 1-0, inspiring books and films on the subject.
Keough appeared in 17 games with U.S. Men's National Team between 1949 and 1957. He scored one goal.
With his playing career behind him, Keough coached at Florissant Valley Community College, but was then hired to coach the Billikens soccer team in 1967. The SLU men's soccer team won five NCAA championships (1967, 1969, 1970, 1972 and 1973) under Keough's tenure. He retired in 1982 with a 213-50-23 record at SLU.
Harry Keough was a member of the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame's inaugural class in 2009. He was named to the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1976.
Keough was 84.
