St. Louis (KSDK) - Passengers will be able to get through airport security a bit faster because a government pre-screening program is being expanded to more airports in the United States.

Homeland Security Janet Napolitano said Wednesday it represents a "fundamental shift" in aviation security.

The program identifies people who travel many miles each year and asks them if they want to sign up for the TSA pre-check program.

It would allow them to go through airport security in an expedited manner. In some cases, they will not have to take off their shoes and belts or remove laptops out of their luggage.

Federal officials are not saying what specific criteria flyers will have to meet to be invited into the program. Some security watch dog groups are concerned the information collected on frequent travelers is not well-guarded in the computer systems of the TSA.
