Earth City, MO (KSDK)- NewsChannel 5 received calls and Facebook messages into our newsroom from many concerned UPS employees. This is in response to a rash of car break-ins at the Earth City UPS.

St. Louis County Police are calling this a "crime of opportunity."

The UPS location has a big parking lot and police say criminals see this as a way to target many cars at once.

St. Louis County Police say nine cars were broken into in the parking lot on Tuesday night. There have been 17 break-ins since October.

Employee Jerry Thomas, says his car was broken into twice: once three years ago, and then again Tuesday night. In both cases nothing was stolen, but he says he is constantly worried about his car. After the first incident, he says he went to the UPS Lost Prevention Department and they told him they are not responsible for this sort of thing.

Many employees say they want UPS to take preventive measures to make sure the burglaries come to an end.

In a statement UPS said "UPS is cooperating with local law enforcement which has been involved with reports of the break- ins since they began. For security purposes and for the safety of employees, UPS has added extra security patrols."

Police continue to investigate.
