JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon says approval from voters should be required before tolls are installed on Interstate 70 - though he did not say whether he supports the idea.
The Department of Transportation has sought authority to form a partnership with private contractors to rebuild I-70 and recover the costs with revenue collected from tolls. The department is governed by a commission whose members are appointed by Missouri governors.
Nixon was asked about tolls during a news conference Thursday with members of The Associated Press and the Missouri Press Association during their annual Capitol media event. The governor says a variety of ideas for Missouri's transportation system should be considered.
Transportation officials have offered three options for improving I-70 with a price tag ranging from $2 billion to $6 billion.
