(KSDK) - Illinois State Police are investigating an early morning crash that sent five people to area hospitals. The accident happened at 3:14 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 55/70 near Fairmont City, IL.

Police say Anna Jarmon, 28, of Maryland Heights and Christina Kelly, 25, of St. Louis were passengers in a Ford Explorer driven by Cori Jarmon, 33, of St. Louis.

The two passengers began arguing. Anna Jarmon, who was the front seat passenger, wanted the driver to pull over so she could fight Kelly on the side of the road. Anna Jarmon then grabbed steering wheel and turned it to the right causing their vehicle to leave the roadway. The Explorer overturned when the driver tried to steer back onto the interstate.

The Explorer was struck by a Hyundai Sonata and a GMC Envoy as it rolled across the southbound lanes of the interstate. The Sonata was then struck by a Toyota Tundra.

The three occupants of the Explorer were transported to an area hospital. The driver has serious injuries.

Both occupants of the Hyundai, Michael Adams, 22, of Swansea, IL and Michael Lively, 34, of Collinsville, IL were airlifted from the scene to area hospitals. Their injuries are described as serious.

The two occupants of the GMC Envoy had minor injuries and refused medical treatment.

The driver of the Toyota Tundra, Jonathan Goedeke, 26, of Granite City, IL, was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence of alcohol and taken to the Madison County Jail. Goedeke was not injured in the crash.

Police say shortly after the initial accident there was a two-vehicle, hit-and-run crash involving a tractor trailer at the same location. No one was injured in the second crash.

Police say further charges are pending.
