St. Louis (KSDK) - The best way to stay alert and prepared during severe weather season is by having a NOAA weather radio.

The radios can be custom set to your area and to only the specific alerts you are interested in. NOAA weather radios can be purchased online through a lot of online retailers such as, Sears, and Staple. They can also be found in your local grocery or hardware stores (Home Depot, Schnucks, Lowes, Radio Shack, etc).

As severe weather season starts, some stores may run low, so make sure to get yours early.

While nothing is as valuable as a NOAA weather radio, there are apps for your smartphones and other smart devices that can also help keep your family safe.

The First Alert Weather App is free and available for both iPhones and iPads, and has timely and accurate warnings and radar.

Other third party apps like "Noaa Weather Radar" can also be customized to act as a weather radio sending you push notifications, and audio alerts during severe weather.
