Chicago, IL (WLS/CNN) - A young mother and her baby are recovering after being shot while sleeping in their Chicago home.
Tonisha Allen, 24, was sleeping in a back bedroom with her 1-year-old daughter, Jaliyah Allen, when they were both shot around 1:30 a.m. Thursday.
Police and family members say one bullet from outside penetrated the home, went through Jaliyah's head and jaw, then traveled to her mother's leg.
"This ridiculous. Kids come and shoot up your house. My little niece 1-years-old battling for her life," said Katina Allen.
Allen was in the Pulman neighborhood home at the time with other family members.
Tonisha's stepfather, Omiah Newman, says he heard two shots which woke him up.
"I thought I was dreaming but then we heard our daughter scream so we jumped out of bed and rushed in there to her aid. Then I asked her, my wife to go check on our grandbaby," said Newman.
"When I picked her up I felt something wet dripping and I picked her up and she was bleeding from her head and we called 911," said her grandmother Tina Cornell.
Tonisha is going to school to be a pharmacy technician, and has been focusing on raising her daughter. Now her family is looking for answers and they don't know why someone would fire at their home.
"She's a sweet person, everybody knows Tonishia is a sweet person, they call her Pooh. Everybody know Pooh, they Pooh is a sweet person she do nothing to nobody. She don't argue she don't fight, she do none of that," said Allen.
The toddler is in serious condition and mom is said to be in good condition.
