Jeffrey Stone and Rhonda Marie Matthews
St. Louis (KSDK) - Porter Stone, 5, and his father, Jeffrey Stone, were found near Chicago, in Alsip, Illinois, so the Amber Alert has been canceled for the boy who police say was abducted by his father from St. Louis Children's Hospital.
Tiffany Stone, the boy's mother, says Porter was taken to an area hospital to be checked out and he is fine.
St. Louis police say Jeffrey and his mother, Rhonda Marie Matthews, were with the boy and they were taken into custody. Both Jeffrey and Matthews had felony warrants issued against them, for kidnapping, interfering with custody, and endangering the welfare of a child.
Tiffany is planning to travel to Chicago to be reunited with Porter, but is still coordinating things with family, police and the hospitals, according to NBC 5 News Chicago.
The St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office charged Jeffrey Stone and Rhonda Matthews with kidnapping, interference with custody, and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child. Stone and and Matthews are being held on $1 million bond.
A third person, 37-year-old Heather Minton of Chico, California, was arrested with Stone and Matthews. Charges against Minton are still pending.
SARAA and AMBER alerts were issued Tuesday night after police say Jeffrey took Porter from St. Louis Children's Hospital after being discharged.
Police say the incident happened at 4:05 p.m. Tuesday when Jeffrey took his son to his car without permission. Jeffrey Stone then reportedly called the mother of the child to tell her he was taking him. The mother has custody of the child.
Porter was at the hospital because he is next in line for a heart transplant. Officials said the young boy was discharged from the hospital wearing an IV bag that contained only 48 hours worth of medication.
Jeffrey and Porter were believed to be headed for Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. Officials there were alerted, but the boy was never spotted.
Porter's uncle says there has been an ongoing custody battle between the parents.
Tiffany tells the NBC affiliate in Chicago that she and Jeffrey also have a two-year-old daughter together and that he had threatened to take both children, but never took action.
Tiffany says Jeffrey and his family are from California and did not know of a Chicago connection.
Illinois State Police and the Alsip Police Department were called to the Baymont Hotel in Alsip, Illinois early Wednesday morning. Once there, they found Jeffrey Stone and his son. Rhonda Marie Matthews was in the hotel room as well, along with Heather Minton and another juvenile.
