Shiloh, IL (KSDK) - A Metro East landlord is adding to his already lengthy criminal record.
Hassan Abrahim is charged with theft. Shiloh Police say he removed signs placed by the village stating his apartments are not approved for occupancy.
Abrahim has three pages worth of charges against him listed on the St. Clair County website, everything from aggravated domestic battery to unlawful interference with a public utility.
Shiloh Police arrested 46-year-old Hassan Abrahim for tearing signs off the doors of some of his apartments. The village put the signs up as warnings stating the apartments are unsafe and don't meet code.
David Williams lives in one of Abrahim's apartments with his fiancée Heather Heath and her two young children. Williams says he caught his landlord tearing down the signs and snapped a few pictures. He gave the photos to police.
"He just snatched it off the door like he didn't care, like he was above the law. He thinks he can do whatever he wants. Those signs don't mean anything to him," said Williams.
Williams says this isn't the first time he caught his landlord doing something illegal. Abrahim was charged last summer for stealing electricity.
"I think he is not a good landlord. That's how I feel about him because he'll come and get your rent money and not fix anything," said Heath.
She says her apartment is in bad shape.
"There's water coming out of the ceilings, the carpet I know is nasty. It hasn't been changed in who knows how long. I've got a window in front of my house that's broken and he won't fix it," said Heath.
Police say Abrahim was arrested Thursday and taken to the St. Clair County Jail where he posted bond and was released.
NewsChannel 5 confronted Abrahim about all the issues but, he had no comment.
Shiloh Police say city engineers will be back in the neighborhood sometime this week and if the signs are missing again police will start another investigation.
