St. Louis (KSDK) -- A local elementary school has been named a 2012 Champion for Character School, an honor awarded to just three schools in the state of Missouri.
Woerner Elementary, located in the 6100 block of Leona, is the only elementary school to earn the title.
St. Louis Public Schools say the Champions for Character program recognizes schools for intergrating service-learning into the school curriculum and school culture.
Woerner Elementary was presented with the honor by the Cardinal's very own Fredbird during an all-school assembly.
The school is also scheduled to be recognized on the field before the Cardinals game on Wednesday, May 2.
Woerner Elementary serves approximately 380 neighborhood students in gender-specific classrooms.
