(CNN) -- Openly gay spokesman for GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney abruptly resigned Tuesday after saying that talk of his personal life had become a distraction for the campaign.
45-year old Richard Grenell was hired in April as Romney's adviser on foreign policy and national security.
Romney's campaign manager said Romney's team was disappointed with Grenell's decision, saying he "had superior qualifications for the position he was hired to fill."
