Hancock County, IN (WXIN/CNN) - The coroner in Hancock County, Indiana, is facing drunk driving charges.
Police arrested her Wednesday night for driving with a blood alcohol level at twice the legal limit.
Exclusive video from Fox59 shows Hancock County Coroner Tamara Vangundy being put through a field sobriety test.
According to the probable cause statement, Vangundy could not keep her balance during the instruction phase of the test.
"It was just a poor decision, I was like I have got to go, I have got to go, and I should not have," said Vangundy during her one phone call after being booked into the Hancock County Jail.
Vangundy was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated after she showed up to an apparent suicide with a strong odor of an alcohol beverage coming from her breath.
"Trying to handle it just like I would anybody else if it had been somebody else pulled up to the scene intoxicated you wouldn't have me come out the elected official that's the only difference," said Sheriff Michael Shepherd.
The news of her neighbor's arrest was surprising to Candace Gervais.
"It's just shocking, maybe because it's the neighbor," she said.
Gervais says she's used to see Vangundy's campaign signs in front lawns during election time. She's not used to seeing her in this kind of video.
"I've always seen her helping the neighbors out. If something was going on next door she would go and check it out to make sure everything was ok," she said.
Vangundy was booked into the Hancock County Jail where she will likely remain until a Friday court appearance.
